How to Make a Teddy Bear From a Baby Onesie
I really tin can't have credit for this thought. A friend asked me to make a stuffed bear from the outfit her babe wore home from the hospital. She got the idea from Pinterest and it was a bad link then I can't source it.
So, I had to come up with my own conduct pattern. I used every bit few pieces as possible, merely some extra stitching gives information technology more shape and allows information technology to sit. It was based off of THIS one, but I changed it quite a chip.
I made one from one of our old onesies get-go, since I was terrified to cut into that precious infant outfit. I was glad that I practiced first, only I was happy with how both of them turned out! Here is hers:

~vesture item to upcycle (or fabric)
~lightweight, fe-on interfacing
~scissors (paper and fabric!)
~thread
~ribbon (optional)
~fiberfill
~sewing car
~manus sewing needle
~comport pattern (bachelor HERE)
***I have had a few people enquire most sizing. The finished conduct measures about 8" loftier. These bears were made with a newborn outfit and a 9 calendar month onesie.
***Also, I have been getting some feedback on this pattern so I feel compelled to warn you that the resulting bear using this pattern commonly looks more than like the deport made with the purple onesie. It is a chubbier bear vs. a long acquit. I honestly like the chubby bear amend! There are many factors that tin can alter the shape of your behave, including the blazon of fabric used, how tight you pull the neck in, how you print the design, and how information technology is stuffed. You can fifty-fifty squeeze it and smoosh information technology until takes on a dissimilar shape, too. This is a free blueprint and I did my best. I took the pictures as I was making the pink behave and then that is what is used for the tutorial pics showing the structure. Start out with the vesture detail you wish to upcycle. Or, buy fabric. That works, also, merely I haven't been doing much of that lately.

Then, you want to dismantle it. The best fashion to start is to snip out those side seams. I had to cut off the bottom cuffs to get to them, though.
Figure out how to fit the pattern on the available cloth. This may take some thought- likewise exist mindful of directional prints. With this particular outfit, I cut the bottoms off but below the pocket and cut the arms off then that I could make practice and use them as well. At that place wasn't plenty material in just the main torso role considering it is so tiny! For the onesie, which was a half-dozen-nine month size, the blueprint pieces fit on the main body function. If you need to make the artillery separately, only make them 1/2" longer on the pattern slice and cut it apart ane/iv" from the body of the bear pattern.
Now, knit fabric likes to stretch. That is what makes information technology so comfortable and easier to put on a squirmy baby. For this project, though, you want it to be not-stretchy. Interface the back of each piece with a lightweight, iron-on interfacing. It makes information technology much easier to work with and the final product stuffs improve.
Next, cut our your pattern pieces. If you lot are able to fit the pattern on without making separate arms- good for yous! It will be a lilliputian easier.
If y'all had to brand exercise, similar me, sew on the artillery.
Apply a one/iv" seam assart throughout this projection. Sew the front pieces together from the brow to the lesser of the belly. Sew the back pieces together from the back of the head to the bottom of the bum, but leave an opening in the back. There are dots marked on the blueprint pieces- just sew betwixt those.
Notation- I tweaked the pattern as I went, then yours will expect a little different in shape than mine practise hither. Only follow the pattern if y'all don't want a pointy tail poking out or an oddly shaped head.
Now, you want to embroider the eyes on. Y'all could use push eyes or other cute things, but I went with black embroidery floss and satin stitched the eyes. It is not a choking hazard this style, but this entire projection is at your ain take chances/supervise your child. I am not responsible in any style. Legal disclaimer. All of those kids toy manufacturing regulations scare me. You can do the olfactory organ now, too, if you prefer, but I liked being able to shape it a little more afterwards information technology was stuffed.
Stitch the front and dorsum pieces together. You can clip the corners and curves, but I just went around the whole thing with pinking shears because it was easier.
Flip it correct side out and run up the ears. Only stitch a directly line from the outside to the within of the ear. Don't try to curve information technology- trust me and my excessive seam ripping. Sew a straight line. A shorter run up length would exist practiced, too.
Stuff the arms and legs. Utilise pocket-size amounts of fiberfill and stuff evenly. Sew lines on those equally shown on the pattern piece. Again, this took a lot of tweaking and seam ripping on the first deport to get the shape just right, so follow the design!
Stuff the rest of the acquit...
Stitch it closed past hand with a ladder stitch. Just google it if you don't know how. This isn't my best work, but it is usually invisible.
Final touches...
~Wrap some heavy thread around the neck tightly to pull it in and knot it well. Tuck the loose thread ends into the bear. *****THIS STEP MAKES A Really BIG Departure IN THE SHAPE OF THE Comport!!!!!*****
~Embroider a nose on the carry. It works better to practice it at the stop because y'all tin shape it a trivial bit. I stitched a triangle and and then satin stitched over that until I got the look I wanted.
~Add a bow... if you want. This ane I added one on the ear- it is sewn down really well, so I don't think she volition ever be able to pull that off. The other bear has a ribbon bow around the neck instead. I similar that, also.
Then, because I simply couldn't permit that little pocket go, I made a tiny little blanket for the bear.
I was actually low on cloth at this point, and then I mixed in some other cotton wool scraps. The back is some scrap minky from a taggy blanket for last year's Functioning Christmas Child shoebox. It has 1/8" seam allowances, so it was really choosy to make. No tutorial for this part... but pictures.
I love this idea and wish that I had done it before with my kids! I all the same have some items saved in storage, and so I might effort to do something like this when I become a grandmother 1 day. I miss babies, so the idea of being old enough to exist a grandma doesn't even make me sad now.
